我們要指出的問題是，作為全球城市的香港不容驕傲、怠慢，必須不息測驗考試在改變的世界經濟中，以其競爭力來尋找成長的空間。

香港需要這些空間來締造更多高端服務的工種和就業機遇，這些機遇將繼續鞭策社會佈局的中產階層化，而同樣重要的是如許才可以知足當地專才的期望，在一個活躍的就業環境裏與來自內地及世界各地的專才共建一個活力實足的全球城市。

在人均增添價值及對當地生產總值貢獻方面，成績是不是可以更進一步，這是可以計議的。圖11的統計數量顯示，駐港的地區總部由1991年的602間增長至2019年岑嶺的1541間，但往後三年均錄得下跌，到2022年只有1411間。一樣重要的是，從圖11可以發現，香港區域總部的增進早在2006年擺佈已達到一個瓶頸，再無一種跳躍式的發展。而香港要保持它的全球城市地位，此中一件重要的工作是維持作為跨國公司在區域內營運批示的中間。6 圖11展示了1991—2022年間有香港境外母公司的駐港公司數量，如果將地域總部、地域辦事處和本地供職處三者一併斟酌，那仿佛成長狀態良好。「總部經濟」的主要部分在於地區總部的營運。可是，本地服務處只負責香港事務，它們的增加很大水平反應出內地企業和機構更多營業在香港進行而已，而地域服務處的功能亦只限於調和區內營業運作，未真正算得上是「總部經濟」的焦點。顯明地，香港今朝的表示是略為裹足不前，有待改良。不外，當我們的關注轉到香港「總部經濟」（head quarters economy）的成長狀態時，則不難發現，擺在眼前還有多種挑戰。

要鞏固及持續成長香港為一個全球城市，就必需繼續找到新的成長動力。而需要改良的不不但是增加地域總部的數量，一樣重要的是活躍和多元的國際聯繫。

從表3 可見，資產經管業在2005—2020年間，無論在公司的數量還是就業人數均有光鮮明顯增進。

更積極地面對這項挑戰，是不休強化香港作為一個全球城市的競爭優勢，並且拓展各種專業和貿易服務，例如香港在資產經管業方面近年就連結延續增加（見表3）。從某個角度來看，當地專才亦不免要面臨因競爭而有可能被替換的問題。

但正如前面所提及，香港作為一個全球城市必須開放它的人才市場，按經濟發展而吸納海外專才，而同時也需要培訓當地人材。

Abstract: Global city research evolves around three key topics: a)  the location of cities in the world economy and a classification of these cities into different tiers of global cities; b )the identification of the functions of individual cities and an analysis how these cities are able to attain their positions in the global urban hierarchy; and c) the social consequences of becoming global cities, especially issues concerning the conditions of the migrants and the phenomenon of income polarization. Previous studies related to the third topic focus on the question of social polarization, and few attempts were made to examine a global city’s changing social structure. Drawing upon statistical data of the 2021 Census, the authors try to analyse Hong Kong’s social structure. Instead of focusing on the issue of polarization, they examine the situation of the middle class and offer a depiction of broader structural social changes.
